Information for Therapists

Addressing your ethical, liability, and data privacy concerns so you can confidently use our AI-powered therapy platform.

Platform Overview

The SelfHelp platform combines secure virtual therapy sessions with AI-driven post-session support, aiming to enhance client engagement and continuity of care. We store session transcripts in a HIPAA-compliant environment, allowing both you and your clients to revisit important therapeutic moments and insights. By integrating AI responsibly, SelfHelp can help clients:

  • Recognize and challenge maladaptive thoughts more effectively
  • Identify core beliefs, values, and personal strengths
  • Work with CBT, DBT, and other therapy frameworks to reinforce insights

While technology will never replace the unique human connection in therapy, we believe it can serve as a powerful supplement that benefits both therapists and clients.

Ethical & Liability Considerations

We understand your concern around ethical standards and liability. SelfHelp is designed with these principles in mind:

  • HIPAA Compliance: We deploy strict access controls, data encryption, and secure hosting to protect PHI. This reduces liability risks and meets regulatory requirements.
  • Client Consent: Before any session recording or transcript is created, clients must provide informed consent. We clearly communicate how their data is used and offer full control over these records.
  • Clear Disclaimers: We emphasize that AI-generated insights or worksheets are supportive tools, not replacements for licensed therapy or medical interventions. This transparency helps maintain ethical practice and clarifies scope of liability.

By giving you control over how AI is used alongside your sessions, we ensure you can maintain your professional standards and responsibilities to clients.

Data Storage & Control

Data privacy is at the core of SelfHelp. We know that your professional reputation—and your peace of mind—depend on secure handling of client information. Here’s how we approach it:

  • Encryption & Secure Infrastructure: All data, including transcripts, is encrypted at rest and in transit using industry best practices (AES-256 and HTTPS), stored in HIPAA-compliant cloud solutions.
  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Only authorized individuals can access transcripts or session records, minimizing the risk of unauthorized data exposure.
  • Therapist & Client Ownership: We recognize that transcripts and session data belong to the therapist-client relationship. Both parties have the right to review, export, and—if desired—delete these records at any time.

Transcripts & Deletion

An important consideration is the retention and control of session transcripts. SelfHelp gives you and your clients the power to:

  • Delete Transcripts: If a client or therapist chooses to remove a transcript, it is permanently deleted from our servers (including backups) within a specified timeframe.
  • Manage Consent: The default setting is that transcripts are only stored if both the client and the therapist opt in. This ensures full awareness and mutual agreement regarding the creation of these records.
  • Access Audit Trails: Each transcript has a detailed log showing when it was accessed or edited, ensuring transparency and accountability.

How the AI Tools Work

SelfHelp’s AI module is designed to reinforce therapeutic concepts between sessions through various evidence-based approaches. Clients can check in anytime—by speaking or writing about their experiences or feelings—and the system references their previous session transcripts to remind them of relevant concepts, techniques, and therapy frameworks.

This is what makes SelfHelp so powerful for in-between sessions:

  • Provide Summaries: The AI highlights recurring themes or key points from transcripts, guiding clients to revisit specific coping strategies and important insights.
  • Suggest Frameworks: Whether rooted in CBT, DBT, or other models, the AI supports clients by mapping their current thoughts, emotions, or behaviors to therapeutic frameworks discussed in therapy.
  • Ongoing Check-Ins: Clients can quickly log new updates about their mental state, personal reflections, or challenges. The AI then draws connections between these fresh inputs and prior discussions, helping keep therapy goals in focus.

Every AI-generated suggestion is just that—a suggestion. It is always your professional expertise and guidance that guide the therapy process. The AI merely reinforces and scales your impact, never replacing clinical judgment.
